Description: Though people primarily enjoy it for its unique look and taste, evidence suggests it may provide health benefits as well. Dragonfruit contains small amounts of several nutrients such as Vitamin C. It’s also a decent source of iron, magnesium, and fiber. When Dragonfruit is not ripe it is basically flavorless so be sure not to eat your fruit before it becomes ripe. Dragonfruit is a bit firm when ripe but will give under the pressure of your thumb if you squeeze it, its wings will dry out, turning yellow with some brown at their tips. Leave them on the counter until they reach that stage and then they’re ready to eat! Pitaya can also be eaten chilled, frozen, juiced, blended, or used to flavor other beverages.
When dragonfruit is ripe, it’s soft and juicy, so cutting it in half and eating it right out of its peel is the easiest way to appreciate it. Even when dragon fruit is ripe, it can be cut in slices or cubes and maintain its shape for a fruit salad. It's also great in smoothies!
Yellow Dragonfruit: This rare cactus fruit has a unique sweet flavor. The seeds are slightly larger than most dragonfruit, and the inside fruit is extremely sweet and juicy!
White Dragonfruit: The fruit's texture is similar to a kiwifruit because of its black, crunchy seeds. The flesh, which is eaten raw, is mildly sweet and low in calories. The seeds are eaten together with the flesh, have a nutty taste and are rich in lipids, but they are indigestible unless chewed.
Red Dragonfruit: Similar in texture and flavor to white dragonfruit, but with beet pink-red flesh inside!
