Spices: Toasted Onion

$8.99

.08 glass jar

This Toasted Onion Powder has an exceptionally rich, sweet, toasty flavor that leaves other onion powders in the dust. It's versatile, as happy in a blend as it is shining on its own. The delicious allium flavor comes through in stews, stocks, braises, rubs, dressings, savory breads and more. It can even be used in sweet baked goods — its onion-y sweetness is unlike anything we've ever tasted. Click on this item to see the full description.

Description: Burlap & Barrels onion powder is made according to a meticulous process of heating and cooling that develops a warm, caramelized flavor. Densely layered yellow onions are sliced and dried before being ground, and the deep flavor is a reflection of the care that goes into the processing of the onions.

Origin: Vĩnh Phúc, Vietnam
Process: Sun-dried and ground
Ingredients: Onion, dried and ground (Allium cepa)
Tasting notes: Fresh Bread • Toasted Sesame • Sugarcane
Pairs well with: Purple Stripe Garlic, Smoked Pimentón Paprika, Caribbean Bay Leaf

Uses: Use in blends that call for onion powder. Bloom in oil or butter at the start of cooking any savory dish (in place of or in addition to fresh onion). Add to stocks, soups, sauces, braises and dressings.

Burlap & Barrel

Burlap & Barrel is building new international spice supply chains that are equitable, transparent and traceable. We connect smallholder spice farmers to high-value markets, we educate consumers about the impact of product traceability on human rights, and we emphasize unique products with terroir that are grown biodynamically using traditional techniques. We work to end inequality and exploitation in food systems that disenfranchise skilled, serious artisans along the entire chain. Mainstream conversations around food sustainability rarely consider the people involved in growing, harvesting, transporting, processing and cooking food. Sustainability is discussed in terms of environmental impact, or the comfort of livestock providing meat, dairy or eggs. We believe that the standard measures of sustainability must evolve to consider the conditions in which the farmers who drive global food supply chains earn their livelihoods. Single origin ingredients draw attention to the unique environments in which incredible ingredients grow and to the farmers with the expertise and commitment to grow them well.
